This is one of the most famous restaurants in Spain. For many years Juan Mari Arzak was the undisputed number one chef in the country. Today, together with his daughter Elena, he continues to remain at the top both here and worldwide. Arzak is a restaurant in San Sebastián, Spain. It features New Basque Cuisine. In 2008, Arzak's owner and chef, Juan Mari Arzak, was awarded the Universal Basque award for "adapting gastronomy, one of the most important traditions of the Basque Country, to the new times and making of it one of the most innovative of the world". Arzak's restaurant, encourages innovation experimenting both with new products and techniques. Following many years Arzak keeps on creating wonderful new dishes and the passage of time only serves to consolidate his reputation as one of the best chef's in the world. In his own words he aims to 'renew and modernize Basque cuisine without losing its traditional base'. There are few awards that this restaurant has not received. It has: 3 Michelín stars and awards from Relais & Chateau, Traditions & Qualité... together with Ferrán Adria and Paco Roncero, Juan Maria Arzak was one of the chefs for the latest Royal wedding. Built as a house in 1897 by the current owner's grandparents (José Maria Arzak Etxabe and Escolastica Lete), they turned it into a wine inn and tavern. At the time, the village of Alza was separate from San Sebastián. When the next generation took over (Juan Ramon Arzak and Francisca Arratibel), it was turned into a restaurant. Kitchen duties are now shared between Juan Mari Arzak and his daughter Elena.
